Russell Johnson has been using computers and CAD (computer aided design) software to design projects since the early 80’s, when AutoCAD first began. Currently, all projects incorporate both 2D drawings and 3D modeling to illustrate the concepts and materials clearly to the client, as well as to the tradesmen building the project.
Architectural services for projects generally fit into five phases:
1. Preliminary Schematic · Define the program and budget · Schematically arrange the components of the program into spaces and rooms · Arrive at a floor plan that satisfies the program (and the client)
2. Design Development · Create 3D computer model · Refine building elements spatially and materially · Integrate mechanical, plumbing, and electrical components
3. Working Drawings and Documents · Create drawings used to build the structure · Coordinate engineer’s drawings & documentation · Synchronize all drawing & documents
4. Bidding and Submissions · Send drawings & documents to builder (s) for bid · Submit for plan check by Building Department · Submit to other agencies having jurisdiction as applicable
5. Construction · Oversee construction process · Coordinate documents with sub-contractors and trades · Monitor quality and compliance with drawings & documents
